The first brothels began appearing in Athens at the beginning of the 6th century. At first, business was slow, but by the end of the 4th century the number of houses devoted to the trade had expanded, and brothels now had to pay income tax. The prostitutes generally stood outside the brothels, dressed in sheer robes, displaying their wares.
